Knight Commander Cade Williams
Five years ago I sat down to write the first book featuring the character of Knight Commander Cade Williams, a former Boston SWAT officer who encounters a supernatural entity known as the Adversary one night and has his life irrevocably changed as a result. The Adversary kills Cade’s beloved wife, Gabrielle, and nearly does the same to Cade. His stubborn need for vengeance keeps him alive, however, and he devotes the rest of his life to tracking down the thing that destroyed his family and his chance at an ordinary life.
His encounter with the Adversary also left him with some unusual abilities of his own; not only can he sense the emotional residue we all leave on the objects around us, but he can also cross the barriers between worlds and walk in the Beyond, that place somewhere between life and death. He uses these skills in his role as knight commander of a modern iteration of the ancient Templar Order, a group that operates in secret, protecting mankind from supernatural threats and enemies.
Cade’s journey began to unfold in HERETIC, published by Pocket Books in 2005. It continued in A SCREAM OF ANGELS and finally concluded with A TEAR IN THE SKY. However, despite great reviews, multiple foreign sales, a comic book series and a film option, Pocket decided not to complete the trilogy shortly after HERETIC first came out. Fans in other countries around the world were able to get all three books and learn how Cade’s search for truth and vengeance ended, but those in America could not.
I gave some thought over the years to simply publishing the final two volumes myself, but always decided against doing so, knowing that somewhere out there was a publisher that would give the trilogy the treatment it needed so that English language readers would be able to enjoy it too. It came close to being sold on several occasions, but more often than not the deal was sidelined at the last moment because the series had already begun at a different publishing house.
As I sat here yesterday, putting the finishing touches on the second volume of the Jeremiah Hunt trilogy, my latest endeavor, I received word that the waiting was finally over. My new partner, Blackbetty Mobilemedia, had not only acquired the German language rights to produce the series as an m-book for the mobile phone market in Germany, but had also requested to do the same with the English language editions for the market here in the States. My agent handled the final details and by the end of the day contracts were winging their way back and forth between New York and Vienna.
Come December 1st, less than 30 days from now, all three books in the Templar Chronicles trilogy will finally be available in the English language for fans to enjoy. The fact that they will also be translated into three new languages – Arabic, Hindi, and Xhosa – was just icing on the cake for me.
For years I’ve been wondering what my readers will think of Cade’s journey. Now, at long last, I’ll find out.

Congratulations, Joe. I haven’t read the series, but I’ll knowing the trilogy will be available must be a relief. As I was reading your blog (and before I came to the end where you say you’ve made a deal) I was going to suggest you check out J.A. Konrath’s blog of … I think … October 25th. He spoke of publishing directly to Kindle and by-passing a traditional publisher. Made some very interesting reading.
