GENREALITY

SOA owns my heart

Sometimes being a writer makes enjoying other books, or movies, and even television shows difficult. Plot holes jump out at us, and we tend to play close attention to things like dialogue and character development. But last year I discovered a show that has me completely hooked. SONS OF ANARCHY was number one for me last season, both for entertainment and for inspiration, and this year it’s just gotten better.

It gets under your skin, then into your heart, and in my opinion, the writing is at the core of it all. The acting is a big part of it too of course, but the writing is where it all begins. The SOA writers don’t pull their punches when telling the story, and that is something I admire greatly. It’s gritty, raw, and bad in a very good way. SOA is not a glossy show with lots of fancy graphics and bright colors. It’s a gutsy one about a small town, and the outlaw MC club that lives there. It shows the good and the bad, and keeps pulling me in deeper and deeper.

The acting is unparelleled. Katey Sagal is the top biker matriarch and Ron Pearlman is the president of the club. Kim Coates and Mark Boone Junior are a couple of others I love. You might not recognize their names, but I bet you’ll recognize them as they are no strangers to hit movies or tv shows. Then there’s Charlie Hunnam. He plays Jax, the hot biker at the center of the show.

To say the show is about a motorcycle club wouldn’t be wrong, but it would be incomplete. Like all things great, it’s about so much more than that – family, loyalty, integrity, love, honor, and all the shades of grey that surround those things. If you like shows that hit you in the head, the gut, and the heart, you have to check out SONS OF ANARCHY.

If you’d like a chance to win Sons of Anarchy: Season One on dvd, just tell me in the comments what you’re watching this season, and why you love it. I’ll announce the winner on Sunday.

    Hi Sasha :)
I haven’t seen or heard of Sons of Anarchy before.
I don’t think it is available where I am.
I am loving House this season & Supernatural & my new favorite is Castle with the irrepressible Nathan Fillion.
    :)
    All the best,
    RKCharron

RK. We get ti on Superchanel. Or the internet. :)

I found it when I was surfing websites looking for a way to watch a missed episode of Californication. and have been hooked ever since. SUpernatural is a one of my faves too. Especially the first 2 seasons. I’m not loving the last season or two as as much, but I still love Sam and Dean.

I’m only watching two shows this season: “Castle,” with Nathan Fillion (of “Firefly” fame — and which is sufficient reason to watch almost any show). It’s a cop show, akin to “Murder, She Wrote,” but the chemistry between Fillion and the female lead, Stana Katic, keeps me coming back for more.

And despite the sometimes sloppy execution, I’m hooked on “FlashForward” the same way I was hooked on the first season of “Heroes.” What’s really going on? What’s going to happen next? I’m just hoping it doesn’t jump the shark the way “Heroes” did.

Hi Peggy. I’m so glad to see people are watchingCastle. I really enjoy that show as well. I love Nathan Fillion. He’s from my home town, and came back to do improv during out theater festival last summer.

I second the goodness that is “Castle”. Nathan Fillion is wonderful. As well, I am a big Dexter fan even though I don’t think this season is a good as others.
Like RK – I haven’t had the chance to watch Sons of Anarchy yet, but it certainly sounds interesting! And bonus! Ron Perlman?!? Big fan of his.

    Cheers,
    Kate

Kate, I agree with you about Castle, and Dexter. I’ve discovered a few shows have lost their spark for me this season. :(

Between two jobs, homeschooling Genius Kid, and my own writing, the only show I’ve been watching this season is The Guild. Yep, paint me a geek.

I’m bummed that I hadn’t heard of Sons of Anarchy until now. I love Ron Perlman! It’s cool he’s not in make-up for once a la’ Vincent or Hellboy.

Nope, no makeup for him this time. The costume is leather and jeans, and a tattoo of two. ;)

I hope you check it out.

I really enjoy Criminal Minds, and Bones as well, Crystal. For some reason, HOUSE just doesn’t get to me the way it seems to hook others though.

I’m also a big fan of Ron Perlman’s since “Beauty & The Beast,” but I’ve never seen “Sons of Anarchy” and would love to.

My favorite shows are “Supernatural,” “Lost,” “Medium,”
“Fringe,” and “Dollhouse” because I’m a big sci-fi/fantasy fan. (I’m also enjoying “FlashForward.”)

I also love “Bones” and “Castle” because I love me some David Boreanaz and Nathan Fillion, but they’re both good shows too! :)

    Thanks for the contest!

I admit the previews for FLASHFORWARD intrigued me, but I kept myself from watching it because I thought of Heros, and how it got a little too convoluted for me after season 1. I’ll be curious to see what people think of FF at the end of the season.

Don’t enter me in the contest — I don’t watch television except for the weather channel — but I thought I’d put in a vote for a non-American TV show I do collect on DVD. It’s a really wonderful British spy/political thriller called Spooks (MI-5 in America) that has always had amazing screenwriting, great actors and the best storylines.

So far I’m getting into Flashforward. It’s a lot better written and produced than I thought it would be. And there are parts that just give me and my wife chills while we’re watching. It’s a freaky concept and the show’s writers are milking it for all it’s worth. I just hope it doesn’t go all Twin Peaks and drag out the central mystery beyond all reason.

I’m watching The Big Bang Theory, Paranormal State, NCIS, Ghosthunters, Destination Truth, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Ghost Adventures, Psych & lots of Disney. I crack up on Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place & Suite Life on Deck. I do have kids, otherwise I wouldn’t have started on these, but they really are funny. My tv & movie tastes as well as reading leans toward paranormal.
